Which printhead should you use / how does the resolution affect my label printing requirements?
Theres nothing worse than a blurred image. So it is also with labels. If you buy a mobile phone that only takes 1 megabyte pictures, this is all you get! Thermal printers use point-sized heating elements arranged in rows, and just like pixels, the more DPI (dots per inch), the sharper the quality. Print heads are created with dots per mm. 8 points/mm = 203 dpi, 12 points/mm = 300 dpi. The type and size of the label to be printed are the two most important factors.
So what print resolution is the best for you?
It depends on what you want to print, different industries have different standards for print quality. For barcodes, the difference between a 203 or 300 DPI expression is minimal. The standard printing resolution of 203 dpi is sufficient for standard shipping labels, larger barcodes, and text. 300 DPI is recommended if your application requires higher print quality, e.g. small fonts, complicated barcodes, graphics and photos. The smaller the pressure, the higher the DPI print head should be selected.
Printed at 203 dpi
With 203 DPI, printing faster and an acceptable image is achieved for most applications. Small 5pt and 6pt text is not recommended, and labels with a size of 1" x .25" may not print readable barcodes. Note that reverse printed text with serif fonts appears jagged and thin strokes are filled in.
Printed at 300 dpi
Most platform labels require a printer with a print resolution of 300 DPI or more. (For example: DHL)The most common print head for most label sizes is 300 dpi. With a 300 dpi print head, you can insert more information into a smaller barcode. Put simply: You can print a smaller barcode with the same amount of data. The smallest readable QR code in 300 DPI is about 50 percent smaller than the smallest readable QR code in 203 DPI. This is particularly helpful for the ticket industry where a lot of information is housed on a ticket and the barcodes (2D barcodes, high density barcodes, etc.) must still be readable even at the smallest sizes. It is good for shipping labels, medium barcodes and text. Small 7pt and 6pt texts can be easily printed. Smaller labels can be easily printed with scanable barcodes. Note that reverse printed text with serif fonts appears sharp, but thin strokes are filled in.
