The fuel used in an internal combustion engine passes from the fuel tank to the carburetor through gravity. However, before the fuel reaches the carburettor, it must still pass the petrol tap. Its task is to interrupt the flow of fuel - if necessary. The fuel tap is operated manually.
The simple design of the petrol tap makes it hardly prone to error. However, the petrol tap is not immune to wear. For example, the seals can harden, dry out or become brittle. The seals do not suffer and hold properly tight. Fuel can then escape or leak into the system on the petrol tap.
