●This grey card provides a standard reference object for exposure determination in photography. Its apparent brightness (and exposure determination) therefore does not depend on its orientation relative to the light source.
●By placing a grey card in the scene, being photographed oriented at a defined angle relative to the direction of the incident light, and under a reading from it with a reflected light meter, the photographer can be assured of consistent commitments to their photographs.
●In addition to providing a facility for trade fair exposure, a grey card provides a convenient reference for white balance or colour balance, so that the camera can compensate for the light colour in a scene.
●Grey cards can be used for white balance or post-processing white balance in camera. Many digital cameras have an individual white balance function. A photo of the grey card is taken and used to adjust the white balance for a sequence of photos.
●For post-processing white balance, a photo of the grey card in the scene is taken and the image processing software uses the data from the pixels in the grey card area of the photo to set the white balance point for the entire image. Many ambitious photographers or hobbyists consider grey cards an essential part of the digital photography process.
