The difference between waterproof and water-repellent jackets
Buying a jacket can be confusing as different terms and reviews are used. Below is a simple guide to help you choose the perfect jacket: Water-repellent: The fabric is treated with a coating that repels water. These jackets offer excellent value for money to keep you dry in light showers. Water-repellent: The fabric has been treated with a DWR (durable water-repellent impregnation). This allows moisture to bead and roll off from the surface. Ideal for light rain or in short term heavy rain. Waterproof: These fabrics can withstand heavy rainfall without moisture penetration. Usually a laboratory tested rating for the "water column" is indicated which measures the degree of waterproofing.
