Description:
A lathe is a tool that has been ground to a point to accurately position a workpiece on an axis. It has an included angle of 60°. The primary use of a center is to ensure that concentric work is produced. This allows the workpiece to be transferred between machining operations without loss of accuracy. One part can be turned in a lathe, sent off for hardening and tempering and then ground between the centers in a cylinder grinder. A center is also used to support longer workpieces where cutting forces would excessively deflect work, reducing the surface area and accuracy of the workpiece.
