What is a 3-way catalytic converter?
The 3-way catalytic converter, the main on-board cleaning device in a vehicles exhaust system, converts harmful gases such as CO, HC and NOx emitted from the vehicles exhaust gases into harmless carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen through oxidation and reduction. When the exhaust gases flow through the cleaning device at high temperature, the detergent in the three-way catalytic converter increases the activity of the three gases CO, HC and NOx, so that they perform certain chemical oxidation reduction reactions where CO at high temperature is oxidized to colorless, non-toxic carbon dioxide gas; HC compounds become water (H20) and carbon at high temperature dioxoxid oxiNOx is reduced to nitrogen and oxygen. The three harmful gases are converted into harmless gases so that the vehicle exhaust gases can be cleaned.
Advantages of Euro 4 three-way catalytic converters
Larger operating temperature range: Euro IV three-way catalytic converters have a wider operating temperature range, so they can work effectively under different driving conditions. These include cold starts, high speeds and idle. In contrast, Euro 3 catalytic converters can be less efficient under certain driving conditions.
