Infrared light waves take up the place in the electromagnetic spectrum behind visible light due to their longer wavelengths. Many surfaces and materials respond to infrared light waves differently than visible light waves, which offer the potential for photographs of subjects or subject characteristics that are otherwise invisible to the human eye. Such images require an infrared sensitive medium such as infrared film or a digital photo sensor, which can be more effective when used without the infrared blocking filters often built up above them. Conventional light sources such as sun, photographic strobe lights or incandescent lamps can be used to provide infrared lighting. However, since infrared films or digital photographic sensors may be more sensitive to the relatively higher energy and visible light with shorter wavelength, these sources can also emit the effects of infrared light can otherwise be obscured.
