A self-locking nut, also referred to as a nylon locking nut, polymer insert locking nut or elastic locking nut is a kind of locking nut.
It is a nut with a nylon collar insert that rotates.
The plastic insert is placed at the end of the nut and its inner diameter (ID) is slightly smaller than the main diameter of the screw.
The insert will stretch over the thread of the screw, but threads are not cut into the nylon.
The nylon insert locks the nut by friction against the screw under the radial pressure force.
Nyloc nuts retain their locking capability up to 121°C.
Authorities do not agree if self-locking nuts should be reused.
For example, the nylon insert is not damaged by the installation, so it can be reused many times. A circular part of the Federal Aviation Administration Advisory allows the reuse of nuts when the prevailing torque is within the specification.
However, an air force requires technical order to replace self-locking nuts in critical areas.
