The original Nord-Lock wedge lock washers are a purely mechanical fastener according to DIN 25 201, which secures screw connections by clamping force instead of friction.

The principle of operation
Nord-Lock screw locking systems consist of a pair of wedge lock washers with opposite wedge surfaces that engage each other. It creates a wedge effect, which prevents the screw from loosening. The shape of the wedge surfaces is selected so that the angle "a" is always greater than the thread pitch "ß".

When tightening the screw connection, the radial ribs are form-fitted into the counter support. The pair of Nord-Lock wedge locking discs sits firmly in place and movements are only possible between the internal wedge surfaces. Even at the slightest rotation in the release direction due to the wedge effect, an increase in the preload force - the screw thus secures itself.

When the screw connection is loosened, a so-called clicking effect is created by sliding the inner wedge surfaces on top of each other. Under these conditions - positive fit and click effect - Nord-Lock secures every screw connection, even under strong vibration and dynamic load.
