Founded in 1958 by James How, an engineer who made strings for his own instruments, Rotosound was known worldwide for its high-quality products and famous endorseas such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Queen to name a few. The Whos John Entwistle began a long partnership with James and helped develop the swing bass strings that have become the industry standard.

Rotosound Saiten gelten als Synonym für zeitlosen Klang, Langlebigkeit und als wichtiger Teil der britisch-europäischen Rockgeschichte.
James How (ehemaliger Geigenstudent und späterer Diplomingenieur) stellte schon früh privat Saiten für seine eigenen Instrumente her und gründete daraus im Jahre 1958 das Unternehmen Rotosound, welches innerhalb kürzester Zeit weltweite Anerkennung für die Herstellung hochwertiger Saiten fand.
Zu den ersten Rotosound-Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zählten Musikgrößen wie die Shadows, Beatles, Rolling Stones sowie das London Symphony Orchestra und das Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Auch für die Gitarrenrarität Vox Organ sowie die Burns Guitar Company stellte Rotosound Saiten her. Maßgeblicher Impulsgeber war John Entwistle (The Who), welcher an der Entwicklung der SWING BASS Roundwound Saite beteiligt war.
Der Erfolg sprach sich schnell herum und zog als „British Invasion“ weitere Künstler/-innen und Bands wie Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd und Queen magisch an. Jaco Pastorius, The Edge, Oasis, Guthrie Govan, Billy Sheehan, Doug Wimbish sowie aktuell Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass) und Mikey Demus (Skindred) wussten und wissen den legendären Rotosound Sound zu schätzen.
Was mit E-Bass Saiten begann, erweiterte sich auf SWING-, JAZZ- und SOLO-Bass Saiten, welche bereits für Weltklasse-Qualität standen, als die Saiten anderer Hersteller/-innen noch in der mühsamen Entwicklungsphase steckten. Heute umfasst das Rotosound Sortiment mehr als 130 verschiedene Saitensätze: 57 E-Bass, 21 Akustik-Gitarre, 3 Akustik-Bass, 4 Klassikgitarre, 31 E-Gitarre sowie 14 verschiedene Sätze für traditionelle Instrumente.
