What is softshell?

Have you heard of softshell? Softshell is a functional fabric that is wind and water resistant and warm. It is super stretchy and therefore the perfect addition to ski and snowboard jackets or trousers. Also thanks to the slim fit, this fabric is the first choice for anyone who wants flexibility and speed, as it makes you more aerodynamic! Would you like to know more about softshell? Here you will find everything you need to know.

Softshell is a fabric used for sportswear. This material consists of three layers. The outer layer is water resistant and elastic (either 2-way or 4-way stretch). The middle layer is water and wind resistant and breathable. The inner layer that sits against the body is brushed to provide soft and comfortable insulation. All together makes for comfortable, flexible, wind and water resistant clothing.

The big difference between hard shell and softshell clothing is breathability. Softshell is extremely breathable, making it suitable for any physical activity - from hiking to skiing and snowboarding. Soft shell material provides more comfort than traditional hardshell. As it is softer, it also allows greater freedom of movement.

If the jacket is made of only one layer of hardshell fabric, it is lighter and packs away better than softshell as it matches the insulating layers that wear underneath. Hardshell is usually wind resistant and offers more protection against water than softshell. Many ski and snowboard jackets consist of a combination of hard shell outer layer with insulating layers underneath.

Softshell clothing keeps you dry in light rain or snow. If you are downpours or if you are sitting more often in the snow, a hardshell jacket is probably the better choice.

Is softshell waterproof?

First, we have to answer what "waterproof" actually means. We know what we mean when we say our outerwear should be waterproof. We think we dont want to get wet! But waterproof literally means that water cannot penetrate into the outerwear from the inside or from the outside. That would be like carrying a plastic bag. But what we actually want is an optimal combination of water resistance and breathability. The water on the outside of the jacket is designed to remain outside while the moisture on the inside is to be wicked away from the body.

One of the advantages of softshell is that it is extremely breathable, the downside is that it is less water resistant. But since softshell technology has been evolved, we can now produce softshell outerwear with the same 10K water resistance as many of our hardshell jackets. Therefore, we can offer outerwear that is waterproof, windproof, breathable and warm (and also flexible and super comfortable...).

Yes, softshell fabric provides warmth. For softshell to be insulating on the slopes, it must be lined; but you can also simply wear additional layers under your jacket. Our softshell ski and snowboard jackets are lined with extremely functional fabric that provides the warmth you need so that you can feel comfortable and concentrate while skiing or snowboarding.

What are the advantages of softshell?

We have mentioned the advantages of softshell several times, but for clarity, we count them again. These are the fantastic benefits of softshell.

Extremely breathable, wind resistant, water resistant, fitted fit, insulating, flexible, super comfortable, looks extremely good.

What distinguishes a normal jacket from a softshell jacket are its special properties. A normal jacket is just another insulating layer. Softshell has an additional insulating layer in combination with a water and wind resistant layer. Softshell is extremely flexible and breathable, making it ideal for physical activities. It can be easily used as a second layer and is a good option when the weather is cold and not too wet. Softshell is also ideal as a material for transitional clothing in spring and autumn. In other words: Softshell is great.

What is the difference between normal and softshell ski trousers?

Insulated trousers consist of a waterproof "shell" or Outer layer and an insulated inner layer. Most of our ski or snowboard trousers fall into this category. These trousers are comfortable, warm and keep you dry. If great freedom of movement is important to you, softshell ski trousers are just right for you. The softshell fabric is more flexible than hard shell and also extremely breathable. So if you are particularly active on the slopes, then you should choose softshell. If you are looking for softshell trousers but need more warmth, you need to add more layers. Softshell can be combined well with other layers. Take a look at our womens thermal trousers and mens thermal trousers.

Softshell is warm, waterproof, windproof, flexible, highly breathable, comfortable and suitable for laying several layers on top of each other. We love softshell. A tailored fit ensures that you fly down the slopes particularly streamlined. Is it fast enough? Perhaps. Let us know...
