Softshell is a fabric used for sportswear. This material consists of three layers. The outer layer is water resistant and elastic (either 2-way or 4-way stretch). The middle layer is water and wind resistant and breathable. The inner layer that sits against the body is brushed to provide soft and comfortable insulation. But what we actually want is an optimal combination of water resistance and breathability. The water on the outside of the jacket is designed to remain outside while the moisture on the inside is to be wicked away from the body.
