How to use a seam ripper:

There are a few different ways to remove a seam with a seam ripper. Consider the weight and thickness of the fabric when deciding which method to use. Always make sure to work in good light so as not to scratch your fabric.
A quick way to remove a long seam is to use the seam ripper to cut every third stitch on one side of the seam. Once finished, you can simply pull out the thread on the other side of the seam.

If a seam is not sewn too tight, you can cut the thread on one side of the seam and take out one inch or two stitches. Grab this approx. Centimeters of thread and pull carefully to collect in the fabric. Just before the thread feels like it breaks, cut it at the other end of the ruffles. Now you should be able to pull this thread directly from the seam. (It depends on the weight of your yarn and the fabric and the length of your stitches, how much you can take off at the same time). Now you have a long thread on the other side of the seam and you can repeat the process until the entire seam is removed.
To open a buttonhole, pierce the fabric at one end of the inside of your buttonhole with your seam ripper. Attach the point of the separator to the other end of the inside of your buttonhole and cut it to size. This prevents overcutting of your buttonhole. If you have an extra long buttonhole, you can do this in two steps by working from the edge to the centre of the buttonhole.
To use the "C" stripper, slide the blade under the stitches taking care to keep the point away from your fabric.
