Product Description

Undoubtedly one of the most effective aircraft types operated by the Luftwaffe during World War II, the Junkers Ju 88 was designed as a fast fast bomber, but it was flexible enough to become arguably the most useful German aircraft of the entire war. In its C-6 variant configuration, the Junkers were optimized for the heavy fighter role, making it easy to transition to support the Air Forces night fighter forces. Initially, single-engine fighters were deployed to defend German territory at night, however, due to the limitations of the German night defence network, they had neither the range nor the firepower to pose a serious threat to British night intruders. However, the Junkers Ju 88 was a very different proposal, with its size, speed, and firepower made him the accomplished nightly fighter and many Bomber Command aircraft would fall victim to their guns. The airfield Luftwaffe at Catania in Sicily was the main airfield in the region and was used as a stage point for many Axis air operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa. The airfield was also home to the night-fighting Junkers Ju 88 Heavy Fighters of I./NJG2, although their fighters were regularly deployed throughout the Mediterranean theater. This aircraft was recalled to Catania in the summer of 1942, presumably to support nightly defense for the planned Axis invasion of Malta as increased nocturnal air invades of the Allies were expected.
