With the American M4 Sherman tank built in large numbers to the Allies, the British decided to match their successful 17-pounder anti-tank gun with the latest version of the Sherman, in the hope that they could produce a tank capable of challenging the German Tigers and Panther heavy tanks. Demanding quite significant redesign of the revolver and with the pistol mounted on the side, the 17-pounder Shermans were arguably the most effective Allied tanks of World War II and were easily able to knock out all German tanks they encountered following the landing in Normandy.
