The Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for the German Kriegsmarine. The ship named after Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck was laid on Kiel in July 1936 at the shipyard Blohm & Voss in Hamburg and ran from the stack in February 1939.

The work was completed in August 1940 when it was accepted into the German fleet. The Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest ever built by a European power.

Over the course of the warships eight-month career, Bismarck performed only a single offensive operation, which lasted 8 days in May 1941 and codenamed "Rheinübung".

The ship was to break into the Atlantic along with the heavy cruiser Prince Eugen and raid Allied shipping from North America to Britain.

The Bismarck displaced 41,700 t (41,000 long tons) when built and 50,300 t (49,500 long tons) fully loaded, with a total length of 251 m (823 ft 6 in), a width of 36 m (118 ft 1 in) and a maximum Draft of 9, 9 m (32 ft 6 in). The battleship was Germanys largest warship, displacing more than any other European battleship, except for the HMS Vanguard, which was put into service after the war.
