Description

Schreiber-Bogen Cardboard model of Limburg Cathedral.
Above the old town of Limburg on the Lahn, next to the castle of the same name, stands the Limburg cathedral on a limestone cliff, also called St. Georges Cathedral and the name of its patron saint. It was built at the end of the 12th century and dedicated in 1235. The construction of the cathedral is divided into four construction stages. In the first phase of construction, the western forehead, the lower south side, the chorus and the transeven rose up into the gallery. This was followed by the installation of the inner pier in the South Nef and the construction of the long southern house gallery. The fourth phase, heavily influenced by the Gothic, emerged from the north side of the Transept and the attic of chance.
At 54.5 metres long and 35.4 metres wide, the cathedral has relatively small dimensions. The Three Nef Basilik contains elements of late novel and primitive gothic. Seven towers protrude the building. Two of them form a double turn front on the western side, widely used in Rhineland. The crossover tower in the center of the cathedral dominates others at 66 meters high. The 5-tier western front is decorated with outstanding style elements: eight rosettes surround a large roll window in the middle. Many other elements, such as round and curved borders, small columns, windows and anti-glare arches adorn the facade. The upper floor of the North Tower is decorated with interlocking Gothic windows. In this tower you hang two bells. The main ring of seven bells is located in the South Tower. The cathedral multi-coloured exterior paint was replaced by a stone color in the 1872-1873. Previous colors were reconstructed from 1968 to 1972 and the cathedral has recaptured its historic appearance.
