What backpack size do I need?

The size of the backpack you need depends on three factors: the length and location or environment of the hike, as well as the season or the expected weather conditions. These three factors will help you determine the type and quantity of equipment you need, and therefore the size of the backpack to carry this equipment.

Backpacks for day hikes (less than 25 litres)

If you are out for a few hours, you usually only need water, one or two additional garments for weather changes, food and hiking poles.

Overnight Hiking Backpacks (1 Night; 25-35 Litres)

With just one night you dont have to have everything you need. Pack easily and the hike to camp and back will make you more fun. These backpacks can also be used for longer day hikes.

Backpacks for hiking and multi-day tours (2-4 days; 40-50 litres)

Longer tours require a larger backpack that can accommodate more food, cooking fuel and clothes to change in addition to camping gear.

Backpacks for longer hikes (5+ days; 60-75 litres)

Apart from long hikes, these larger backpacks are also good for parents who are planning shorter winter trips with younger children where extra warm gear is needed.

Cleaning and care of the backpack

Backpacks can look quietly used after a while. You dont have to wash them constantly. But if it is necessary, please do not use a washing machine, even if you can remove the frame. Rather, you should shake out the backpacks and wipe the inside with a damp cloth. The outside can be showered with warm water and then soak with mild detergent. A soft brush helps against coarse dirt or dirt edges. Then rinse the backpack carefully, squeeze out the foam pads, open all compartments and hang the backpack upside down to dry. After drying, you can impregnate the backpack with a spray can and keep the zips movable with silicone spray.
