Description

The instrument gained its greatest popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, combining the small scale, mood and playing style of a ukulele with the construction and distinctive tone of a banjo, hence the name. Its development was driven by the need for variety artists to have an instrument that could be played with the ease of the ukulele but with more volume intended for those ukulele players who want more of this sweet ukuleleton with pop and snap of the banjo.
Tightening or loosening the eardrum by adjusting the tension hooks on the outside of the drum leads to a change of tone.
The head typically has a fixed tension. Raising it to feel rock hard produces a bright sound with good distinction of notes but less bass response. If you make it loose, it is softer yet firm enough to hold the bridge in place with the tension of the strings. This results in a warmer, less bright sound. The bridge floats on the head and is held by the tension of the strings.v Back and side: Sapele
