Description

During tonsure, Orthodox monks and nuns receive a combo skini with the words: The certainty that Jesus Christ has saved you is your helmet that protects you. And take the word of God. It is the sword that gives you his spirit. (Ephesians 6:17) - A prayer rope is a bow of complex knots. The prayer rope is part of the routine of Eastern Orthodox monks and nuns and is used in monasteries (sometimes by others). For each knot you pray a Jesus prayer, or sometimes other prayers. Originally, prayer ropes usually had 100 knots, nowadays some with 50 or 33 knots are used. Hermits have ropes with up to 300 or 500 knots in their cells. The prayer rope symbolises the whip with which Christ was beaten, but in modern times other materials are also used. The traditional color of the rope is black (symbolizing grief over ones own sins), with either black or coloured beads. The prayer usually holds the prayer rope in his left hand when praying so that the right hand remains free for crossing. When not in use, the prayer rope is traditionally wrapped around the left wrist so that it continues to remind the wearer to pray without ceasing. If this is inconvenient, the rope can be placed in the (left) pocket, but should not be hung around the neck or on the belt. The reason for this restraint is that one should not wear the prayer rope intrusive or visible to other people. The Lord dwells in your soul, your thoughts and your heart, always say, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, the sinner." Orthodox churches regard the prayer rope as the sword of the Spirit because a prayer that comes from the heart and inspired by the grace of the Holy Spirit is a weapon that defeates the devil.
