The prayer cord symbolises the whip with which Christ was beaten, but in modern times other materials are also used. The traditional color of the rope is black (symbolizing grief over ones own sins), with either black or coloured beads. The beads (if they are coloured) and at least part of the tassel are traditionally red. This symbolises the blood of Christ and the blood of the martyrs. Recently, however, prayer cords have been growing in a variety of colors. The prayer usually holds the prayer cord in his left hand when praying so that the right hand remains free for crossing. When not in use, the prayer cord is traditionally wrapped around the left wrist so that it continues to remind the wearer to pray without ceasing. If this is impractical, it can be placed in the (left) pocket, but should not be hung around the neck or on the belt. The reason for this restraint is that one should not wear the prayer cord intrusive or conspicuous for other people. During your tonsure (religious practice), Orthodox monks and nuns receive a prayer string with the words: Oh brother (sister) (name), accept the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17) in the eternal Jesus prayer, with which you will receive the name of the Lord in your soul, your thought, and your heart and everagain again says: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me sinners!"
